Coco Gauff snaps at coach to ‘stop talking’ during tough US Open victory over Caroline Wozniacki

Coco Gauff made it through to the US Open quarter-finals on Sunday, but it was far from smooth sailing.

Gauff beat 33-year-old Caroline Wozniacki, who has been one of the stories of the tournament after coming out of retirement.

The American teenager won 6-3 3-6 6-1, but at the end of that second set tensions boiled over a little.

Gauff was seemingly unhappy with the constant chatter coming from her coach, Brad Gilbert, in her box.

She turned to Gilbert, who was sitting in the front row in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, and shouted ‘please stop’.

During the next game, where Wozniacki forced a third set, she then said: ‘Stop talking’.

The match at this point seemed to be slipping away from Gauff as Wozniacki broke her serve at the start of the final set.

The 19-year-old got things together and rattled off six straight games.

“Sometimes I tell them to chill a little bit,” the 19-year-old said of that moment with her coaching box. “Because I like to think and figure out matches my own way.”

On the challenges of facing Wozniacki, Gauff added: “Definitely getting it to 2-1 (in the third set) was the turning point.

“I got broke and I showed I was still in the match. I started to go for my shots.

“Caroline, it’s like she’s never left, the level she played was amazing. It’s weird because I grew up watching Caroline and when she won the Australian Open, so to be on court with her today was an honour.

“She definitely gets to a lot of balls. I felt a bit like I was playing myself. I knew I had to play aggressive and go for my shots. In some moments I miss but I was happy I could get back and refocus.”

Gauff became the first American teenager to reach consecutive US Open quarter-finals since Serena Williams.

She will now face Jelena Ostapenko in the final eight, who took out top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek.
