Sol Saks, the creator of the show, had a vision. He managed to come up with the whole story and he knew the right woman for the job: Tammy Grimes. Tammy was a huge star at the time, winning a 1961 Tony Award for Best Actress. The witch was initially named Cassandra and Tammy actually considered accepting the offer, but ultimately declined. Why do you ask that? She disagreed with how the witch’s powers would be used. Sol didn’t want to give up his vision, so Tammy declined the offer.
